Web Header for the Open University Headstart Classics Programme

Digital, 2024

Client: Open University Classics Department

I was contacted by the OU Classics Department to create a vibrant web header for their Headstart Classics programme, which is a free course "designed for anyone and everyone who is interested in finding out more about ancient Greece and Rome. With no prior knowledge assumed, these courses are designed to allow you to get a head start with each topic, whether you are currently studying – or thinking about studying – a classical subject at school or university, or are simply interested in knowing more about the ancient world and the people who inhabited it."

This illustration is a redesign of their existing artwork of Athena emerging from the head of Zeus. In this design I introduced a new colour scheme, and incorporated the Parthenon and a blazing sun behind Athena’s head.

The illustration is laid out to be seen in different aspect ratios (square and landscape), and partially in portrait, to fit different online medias.

Illustration concepts, showing how the image would be seen in different ratios of the dynamic header.

Initial colour concepts. Ultimately the red and blue palette was chosen, with edits to make the colours softer.
