Attending the 2023 Presenting the Past Colloquium
Last weekend I had the pleasure of attending the 2023 Presenting the Past colloquium in Vancouver, hosted by Peopling the Past at the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University. I got to meet and hear from multiple scholars in and outside of academia (like me!) who are engaging in bringing the people of ancient world to the forefront of our studies of this era.
Researching & Illustrating Romano-British Samian Ware
To continue my long-dormant ancient pottery series, I turned to one of the most popular Roman ceramics in ancient Britain: Samian Ware.
Illustrating Tullie House Museum’s Roman gallery
The purpose of hiring an illustrator for this gallery project was 'to bring the artefacts and people of Roman Cumbria to life' in a visually accessible way. Each illustration I created depicted someone utilising an actual artefact on display to show how it would have been used at the time in Roman Carlisle.
Making the Hadrian’s Wall illustrated map
As a Romanist in the North, Hadrian’s Wall is quite special to me. I think it’s a fascinating example of how civilian communities interacted with the imperial presence, and just how “Roman” life would have been adapted in such a distant frontier. I wanted to create an illustration for #HW1900 highlighting examples of these people’s presence along the wall, as well as providing a faithful replica of the structure. In the future I hope to expand this illustration to a full map of Roman Britain!
